RANDOM-SPECIFIC.COM DOES NOT SEND UNSOLICITED E-MAIL. For some time now I have been receiving e-mails claiming to be from this website, claiming to be from me, that ask to verify information contained in an attachment. DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT SHOULD YOU RECEIVE ONE OF THESE E-MAILS.

These E-Mails are stealing my identity, posing as me, PHISHING, and spreading a VIRUS and could hurt your computer. Many other websites across the net are experiencing the same problem. These ARE NOT from this site. Robot programs trawl the web and collect info and then use it to spread themselves. So far, this particular version, as far as I know, has not actually found a way to send itself to people who are just viewing the pages here. I DO NOT HAVE A SUBSCRIPTION LIST or ANY OTHER FORM OF TRACKING THAT THIS VIRUS AND E-MAIL COULD POSSIBLY USE TO REPLICATE ITSELF. IN the REMOTE event that you receive one of these E-Mails, DO NOT OPEN It. Just DELETE it.

04-11-04 ADVERTISING IS NOW ON RANDOM-SPECIFIC.COM

After about five years of ad free pages, it has finally become necessary to have advertisements appear at the top of each news section on each of the news pages. This is what happened, for those of you who are interested.

Moreover.com has had in place a policy of allowing web developers to put Moreover newsfeed content into web pages for free as long as no advertising or other commercial content was displayed. They made their money as a business by syndicating their news feeds to commercial websites, corporations etc. for about $1500. per month for each feed for each customer. That has been a pretty good deal for Random-specific.com for the last few years. No ads. Free Feeds. It would not have been possible to even have one news article at fifteen hundred dollars a month. Random-Specific is very grateful for the generosity of Moreover.com, for all of these years.

But times are tough all over and some good things have to come to an end. In this case, Moreover has decided to make some changes in it's policies. Instead of starting to charge ALL developers and small time users of their service the large sums for their newsfeed content, they came up with a more humane solution. Create a new division of Moreover called FeedDirect.com. Feeddirect has partnered with Google Ad Service, and now offer to all of their "Older Free Account Customers" (which random-specific is one) the ability to retain the "free" news feeds by allowing Google a single ad at the top of each Feed column.

Therefore, Random-Specific.com would like to thank Moreover.com and Feeddirect.com for their continuing generosity by allowing the little guys who are trying to provide a source of timely news for their readers. As well, they are tasteful text only ads which do not assault you, your browser and your computer's sensibilities. I have monitored the content before deciding to include them into random-specific.com, or discontinue the news feeds altogether. The ads for the most part seem to be related to topic and so far I have seen no viagra ads etc. etc. Most important, by allowing the inclusion of these subtle ads, random-specific is able to continue to offer a valuable service. I will be making these changes little by little until all of the work is complete for each page, as I do not do this on a full time basis.

Please be patient during this testing period if some of the links do not appear to be working. Some links may simply reload the page. The most likely cause is that content has not been placed for retrieval.

random-specific is converting to CSS format to comply with newer web standards. Standards compliant browsers will find that pages load faster and that more features are available.
                      
The integration of CSS and Javascript will allow for faster loading of the newsfeeds and more precise positioning for page layout.

This update is long overdue. I made a lot of changes without posting them on a daily basis. First I got rid of the automatic refresh on the news pages. It was causing people to think that their system was hanging or freezing if they were using Netscape 4X or below. It did not really but it appeared to. Also I got rid of all of the Navigational images and replaced them with CSS rollovers for browsers that support CSS. The biggest and most time consuming task was to find the extent of CSS implimentation that older browsers would accept while allowing newer browsers to take advantage of the features, all in the same page. A lot of work.

A few more Links on the News Resources page were made functional this A.M.- "added Categories" as promised on the 25th. Also began an alternate page that will be pure CSS, and then will put browser re-directs in place for supported and non supported browsers. No one will be turned away, just encouraged to upgrade!

This Scrolling Update box added. Works in all browsers tested. Mozilla 1.2 and IE 5.5 for Mac and IE 5 for PC use the CSS; NS 4, Opera and i-Cab don't seem to support the CSS in a text box. I've got some new feeds to add to the links on the page to make them functional, next on the schedule is to add them. Made a few adjustments to layout over the last few days.
